TOPIC: “GOD’S PLAN OF REDEMPTION”! [PT 1]

TEXT:  HEBREWS 9:11-12:  (Shows Christ as our “Intercessor; Mediator”)!

“But Christ being come a high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building, neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us”.

Redemption was the aim, intention, proposal, strategy, or the design God used to purchase man from the market place of sin that he was sold to, and bring him back unto Himself.  And there wasn’t but one way to do it, and that was by the shedding of innocent blood of His only Begotten Son, Jesus the Christ!

WHAT IS REDEMPTION?

Redemption: [from a couple of Hebrew words]:

  • Leviticus 25:24: And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land: (Geullah’ – gheh-ool-law’) redemption (the right and the object); (implied) relationship; again; kindred; right.  [Meaning (right of) redemption] – it’s in regard to deliverance of persons or property that had been sold for debt.  [The law required that the “right of redemption” of land and of persons be protected].

(vs 47-48): And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwells by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family:  after that he is sold he may be redeemed (geullah’) again; one of his brethren may redeem (gaal’)  him.                                                                                                                                                                   (Ga’al’ – gaw-al’) to redeem (according to the Oriental law of kinship), is to be the next of kin (and as such to buy back a relative’s property, marry his widow, etc): redeem; redeemer; kinsman; revenger; avenger; ransom; deliver; kinsman’s part; purchase.  (Ruth is a very good example).

(Exodus 34:19-20): All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling amongst thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.  But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb:  and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck.  All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem:  and none shall appear before me empty.                                                                                       This word “redeem” is (padah’), meaning to sever; ransom; to release; preserve; deliver; rescued; by any means.

[Padah’, indicates that some intervening or substitutionary action effects a release from an undesirable condition].

Our Savior delivered us from undesirable conditions: sin, death, hell, and the grave!!!  Hallelujah!!!

REDEMPTION: (two Greek words):  (Luke 1:68): Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people.
[This deliverance of the nation of Israel, is not just the nation in the Middle East, we the believers are now God’s Israel]!

Israel means, he will rule (as) God; to prevail; have power with God.

Jesus has given us the power, Luke 10:19: I give unto you power, over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Acts 1:8 You shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you!  1 John 4:17: As he is, so are we, in this world.

  • Luke 2:38: [When Jesus was presented in the temple]:  And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spoke of him to all them that looked for “redemption” in Jerusalem.
Hebrews 9:12: Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.                                                                        [The Redemptive work of Christ, Hebrews 9:12, brought deliverance through His death, for us from the guilt and power of sin].
This word “redemption” and “redeemed” is from (lu’trosis), meaning, a ransoming.  It goes to another root word (lu’tron) meaning something to loosen with as a redemptive price (atonement).  Then it goes to (lu’o), to “loosen”: break; destroy; dissolve; put off; melt; break up; break down. Lu’o means “to loose, unbind, release” of things!!!

Luke 21:27-28): And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.  And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your “redemption” draws nigh.                                                                                                                                  [Jesus speaking of the end of that particular age they were then living in]:

[The end (or fulfilling) of the age Jesus was referring to was “the age (dispensation) of the Son (Himself), which would be fulfilled at His “resurrection, and "ascension", and the sprinkling of the blood on the mercy seat”  John 20:17!!!].  [The age or dispensation of the Father was up to the Crucifixion of the Son: John14]!!!  Since Pentecost till now, and forever, we are in the “age or the dispensation of the Holy Ghost”!!!

  • The word “redemption” in this verse, Luke 21:28, is (apolu’trosis), meaning,  [the act] ransom in full,  riddance, salvation: deliverance.  Then it refers to “Lutron” meaning to “atone” (at-one).
[Apolu’trosis means, “to be purchased from the slave market of sin, totally set free, never to be sold again].  And it goes back to “lutrosis”, and means “a releasing, for (on payment of) a ransom”]!!!

REDEMPTION IS THE RANSOM PAID TO GIVE US SALVATION:

Matthew 20:28: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom (lu’tron) for many Mark.10:45.

RANSOM (lu’ron) means something to loosen with; a redemption price; (atonement):  and (lu’o) to loosen:  loose; break; unloose; destroy; dissolve; put off; melt; break up; break down.

  • Hebrews 9:22: And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.  (Read verses 23-28).                                                                                                                                       REMISSION: (aph’esis) [freedom; pardon:  deliverance; forgiveness; liberty.                        Aph’esis denotes a release, from bondage, imprisonment, liberation from captivity and remission of debt!!!
  • Romans 3:21-31 (speaks of “the means of salvation”):
(Vs 25): Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the “remission of sins” that are past, through the forbearance of God.
(Propitiation is from hilasmos’, meaning an atonement] or at one ment”; (or “expiation” – a means of covering or remitting sin).

The word REMISSION in this verse is (par’esis), meaning pretermission, or toleration [allowance; temperance; endurance; forbearance; leniency].  Par’esis, is “a letting go, a dismissal and denotes a passing by, a suspension of judgment or withholding of punishment, with reference to sins omitted previously up to the propitiatory (reconciliating) sacrifice of Christ.

forbearance is (anoche’) self-restraint, tolerance; which is the demonstration of God’s forbearance or putting up with men.

CHRIST’S REDEMPTIVE WORK BOUGHT AND BROUGHT US FROM THE MARKET PLACE OF SIN UNTO SALVATION:

WHAT IS SALVATION?

  • Romans 10:9: If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
SAVED is from the root word so’zo, meaning to be “safe”; to save, deliver or protect; “make whole”; heal; be whole, preserve; do well.
    Vs 10: For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
HEART: (not the muscle in your body that pumps blood through the body):  but it’s the root word in the Greek, kardi’a, meaning the thoughts or feelings (mind); or the middle.  [It’s in relation to man’s mental, moral, and emotional activity]:  Mark 12:30: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:  for this is the first commandment.
  • It’s the center of man’s inward life that defiles all he does: Matthew 15:19-20: For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:  these are the things which defile a man:  but to eat with unwashed hands defiles not the man.
  •  It’s the area or arena of Divine influence:  Acts 15:9: And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
Romans 2:15: Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.
  • “The heart” is the “hidden man” (or the real man): 1 Peter 3:3-4: Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel:  but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
This is the “man” spoken of in Revelation 5:6: And I beheld, and lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
The "seven Spirits" being the "Spirit of the LORD" that rested upon "the Branch" that came out of Jesse, who was "Jesus the Christ": Isaiah 11:2-3: And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; and shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORDVs 5: And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.  [The "six spirits" comes out of the "white light" of God's "RIGHTEOUSNESS"]!!!
[This is the conquering of the four faces of our “personalities”]:  Revelation 4:7:  And the first beast was like a lion [soul - emotions], and the second beast like a calf [strength - body], and the third beast had a face as a man [spirit - heart], and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle [mind - intellect].

[These are the areas of our life that we must conquer so that the “Lamb” (Christ in us; the real man) can stand up and be God in the earth]!!!

Back to Romans 10:9-10: If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

SALVATION here is the word soteri’a, meaning, rescue or safety (physically or morally): deliver; health.  Soteri’a denotes “deliverance; preservation; salvation”.  And it goes to the word soter’ , meaning a deliverer, in relation to God or Christ: Savior .

The definition “Soter’” tells us that we needed a “Deliverer; Savior; or “Redeemer” [God – Christ]!!  Then it goes all the way back to the word “sozo”, meaning “TO SAVE”!!!  AND HE (JESUS THE CHRIST) IS OUR SAVIOR!!!

BUT, JESUS DIDN’T JUST “REDEEM US UNTO SALVATION” ONLY!!  IN ORDER TO BRING US TO SALVATION, THERE HAD TO BE SOMEWHERE THAT HE WAS BRINGING US FROM!!!

CHRIST’S WORK OF REDEMPTION:  [DELIVERED US FROM]:

THE CURSE:

  • CURSE OF THE LAW: Galatians 3:13: Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, cursed is every one that hangs on a tree.
CURSE (epikatar’atos) imprecated [invoke evil]; execrable (detestable; very inferior):   Goes to another root word epikatar’atos, which mean to be exposed to divine vengeance, lying under God’s curse.
  • Romans 12:19: Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord.
(VENGEANCE) is from the word “ekdi’esis”, meaning, vindication (to clear from criticism, blame; to defend against opposition; to justify); retribution; avenge; punishment.
Galatians 3:10: For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse:  for it is written, cursed is every one that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
The "Law" given in the Old Testament was a towrah' (a precept or statute) given to God's people to eventually direct them or bring us to Christ.  Towrah' goes to another word yarah', meaning "to point out" (as if aiming the finger), so as to direct us to Christ who fulfilled the Law with "love":          Romans 13:8: Owe no man anything, but to love one another:  for he that loves another hath fulfilled the law.
Galatians 3:13: Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us:  for it is written, cursed in every one that hangs on a tree.
  • CURSE is also from “epi”, meaning, superimposition [to put, stack, or lay on top of something else] of time, place, order, as a relation of distribution, over, upon):
  • Isaiah 53:1-12:  (vs 10): Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief:  when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
2 Corinthians 5:21: He who knew no sin, was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God.

  • Galatians 3:10: For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse:  for it is written, cursed is everyone that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Vs 11: But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident:  for, the just shall live by faith.
Vs 12: And the law is not of faith:  but, the man that doeth them shall live in them.
Vs 16: Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made.  He saith not, and to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is CHRIST.
Vs 17: And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
Vs 18: For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise:  but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
  • Genesis 12:1-3: Now the LORD had said unto Abram, “Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will show thee:  and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:  and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee:  and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed”. Also (Genesis 15:18; 17:4-9); (Hebrews 6:13-16).
Ephesians 2:5: Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved); Vs 8: For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves:  it is the gift of God:  vs 9: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
2 Corinthians 3:6: Who also hath made us able ministers of the New Testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit:  for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.

We are no more under the “curse of the law”!  We are under “grace”!
  • Matthew 5:17: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets:  I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
  • Romans 13:8: Owe no man anything, but to love one another:  for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
